Thoughts from the Keapersphere
“I think a lot about social media use for myself and eventually for my kids (they are 11, 9, and 3). We trend towards being more of a low tech house although still have plenty of devices. [...]
Personally I have complicated feelings in recent years about Instagram. I love photography and love the photos I take of my everyday life and family. Scrolling my own feed truly brings me so much joy to remember little moments. But sharing now feels fraught. I don't want to contribute to other people thinking my life is perfect if I share something good; I also don't want to humble brag about things. But I also wish I didn't have to think about it so much. I also still write a blog and I enjoy writing in that space where there is more room to provide context. As a content producer (writer and podcaster) I feel that I almost have to use social media and the interactions there can be great. But it can also feel like a black hole that sucks a lot of time and energy.
In terms of kids, already we try to talk about what social media is and how people use it, even though our kids aren't on it (and we don't plan for them to be for a long time). I'd love to be an advocate for delaying social media for kids and around "healthy" social media use in teens but am not plugged into that yet. But I appreciate that you have me thinking about that.”
