“You can almost feel the scratchiness of a Pendleton wool blanket draped over your shoulders.”
One of the magical attributes of candles and scent in general is their ability to evoke vivid images and a specific mood. And those associations are unique to each individual: We all perceive scents differently—and the distinctness of those perceptions is one of the wonderful things about being human. I love hearing Keapers share the imagery that comes to their minds when they smell their favorite scent.
Today I’m excited to invite all of you to share those literal images through a little friendly competition!
We are calling for anyone with a photo-snapping device to share a photo that captures the mood of your favorite Keap scent.
We’re looking for creative, fun, thoughtful (or even bizarre!) interpretations of what the scent conjures in your mind. It can be a landscape, a home setting, a facial expression, an animal, or anything else. The beauty of it is that there is no wrong answer, just what resonates with you.
You can enter a photo for any of our scents. Our very serious and official jury will be picking up to 6 photos per scent to be published on our website. This is not a huge newsletter so your odds of glory are high, especially if you are a fan of one our more niche scents!
To add to the fun, we have some exciting prizes:
All valid entries that comply with our terms and conditions will receive a $10 store credit, so everyone is winner. We’ll also have twelve finalists—picked by our community—who will receive a complimentary candle in their favorite scent.*
Keapers will then elect one grand prize winner to receive a year’s worth of subscription candles (12 candles).
In addition, finalists will each pick one of our partner nonprofits to receive a small donation.
Submissions are open until March 17. :)
Have a great weekend!
— Harry from Keap, Steward-Owner
* Since we don’t have all our scents in stock, there may be a wait depending on your selection.

In other news:
- Green Market is our March Seasonal Scent: Green Market is one of our most popular and surprising scents—and the most appropriate scent for this transitional time of year. Each of our scents speaks to a certain color tone, and Green Market says: GREEN GREEN GREEN!!! Cucumber, basil, mint, cilantro, lettuce... This one brings the garden into your home.
- Our Spring Special Release is open! In case you missed it, we have been able to produce a small amount of a number of our limited scents. These are available to shop now until we run out. As I write this, we are just about to run out of Isle of Jasmine, so I recommend grabbing one now if that is one of your favorites! (As a result we will also shortly run out of the Spring Special Release Variety 6-pack, which contains Isle of Jasmine.)
- Documentary recommendation: On the topic of gardens, I was reminded earlier this week of the Keap-favorite (Hudson-Valley made!) 2019 documentary Fantastic Fungi. For those that haven’t yet seen it, it will make you love mushrooms if you don’t already.
- New scents: The formulation process is now starting in earnest for our next two scents! I’m hoping to share an update with our Keaper Lab volunteers later this spring. If you’re also interested in helping us test and fine-tune our new scents, reply to this email.

Thoughts from the Keapersphere
"Just wanted to write and thank you for this letter — I’m a business owner and have been a fan of Keap for years since learning about the Keap approach to business and smelling your candles around NYC. Really appreciate the way your letters combine transparency with thoughtful ways to do operate a company. Now I’m curious to read Reinventing Organizations, too!"
—Kelly in NYC
"So incredible, Harry.
I haven't read this book, but I feel like I should.
Just so proud of your approach and the whole company. Grateful to be a small part of it."
